The art of scouting
Trust us when we say that our “scouting missions” aren’t just an excuse to go on a sick surf trip with our buddies… Well, if I’m going to be completely honest, that’s a big part of it, but there is a whole ‘nother element involved that I’d like to outline here.
Connection
What will always be the most important part of these trips are the relationships we form. Every place we travel to, we strive to make real connections with the locals that so graciously host us. This is really how this all started. Since 2012, we’ve been travelling the world and holding courses, specifically in Costa Rica and Ghana. My fondest memories and strongest bonds from all my travels have always been in connection with spending time living the daily life of the locals.
Education
We’re all big fans of the “teach a man to fish” metaphor. We come down with the rods, in our case medical and lifesaving equipment, and do our best to teach people how to ‘fish’. This can range from teaching junior lifeguard courses to the local kids to holding courses in the use of handheld ultrasound at the local medical clinics, and everything in between. Check out our page on the surf-medic course to get an idea on our future goals in this area.
Business
I wish we could stop there, but fundraising is job by itself. That's why each one of us has focused our energy in a skill-set that can bring in an income to go towards our trips abroad. The next logical step is to supplement what we already do. For the right price, we’ll guide specific groups of competent surfers, using the knowledge we’ve gained from our scouting trips, knowing these places inside and out. We’ll have a reliable guy on speed dial ready to pick us up at the airport; we’ll know the best places to eat on our drive out to the coast (only choosing the places that don’t use tap water to wash the salad); we’ll have someone to call when the differential goes in the middle of the bush… stuff like that. Check out the guiding page for more specifics on all this.
Note: We don’t believe in blowing-up spots that don’t wanna be found. We will only lead trips to the most remote places, where local surfers are excited to see other surfers make the effort to come so far.
